He’ll have an order of breadsticks with his barricade, please. On Sunday, two diners, possibly a couple, were arguing at an Olive Garden in Pineville, N.C. Couples bicker all of the time, but what sets this one apart is what happened after. At one point, the man did what any feuding date participant would do — he hid behind some menus.Adam Howell witnessed the unusual use of menus and took a picture, which he shared on Twitter. “A grown ass man is mad at his girlfriend at Olive Garden & has made a menu fort,” Howell tweeted. Unfortunately for the guy, his makeshift fortress did not offer him protection for long. The waitress came and took the menus away, as is the customary practice at most restaurants, and the pair resorted to playing around with their phones. Howell said the duo did start talking toward the end of their meal, and the man paid. The image went viral. A Tumblr blog where people can submit their own menu forts has been created, but so far only the original has been posted. Howell told the Daily News that he had no idea the picture would be so popular. He said he started getting the retweet notifications on his phone during dinner, and they were just starting to slow down on Wednesday.Throughout the picture’s rise to Internet fame, Howell has had to defend his own presence at the chain many love to hate. Howell told the Daily News that he was there because his daughter likes Olive Garden’s breadsticks and spaghetti.“It’s never my choice to go to Olive Garden,” he said.A couple of people have since sent him joke menu forts, but Howell said it hasn’t become a widespread practice. Howell hasn’t heard from the couple in response to the picture.
