Demi Lovato Books Multi-Episode Glee Arc
By Liz Raftery
Demi Lovato is heading to Glee for Season 5.
The X Factor judge is close to finalizing a deal to join the Fox series for a “significant arc,” TVLine reports. She’ll play Dani, a struggling artist friend of Rachel (Lea Michele) and Santana’s (Naya Rivera) in New York City, according to the report. Her character is set to be introduced in early October and will stick around for at least six episodes.
Lovato isn’t the only big name to sign on to the series. Adam Lambert is also coming on board, and TVLine reports that the two singers will have “several musical numbers together.”
Glee‘s Season 5 premiere airs Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9/8c. Do you think Lovato will be a good addition to the show?

How Black Churches Helped Fuel ‘The Butler’s’ Big Weekend
By C. Molly Smith
The Weinstein Co. appealed heavily to the black faith-based community in promoting Lee Daniels’ The Butler, a strategy that appears to be paying off.
Over the weekend, Daniels’ historical drama debuted to a stellar $25 million, easily winning the crowded box office race and exceeding Hollywood’s expectations. The $30 million-budgeted movie is based on the real-life story of Eugene Allen, a black butler who served in the White House through eight presidential administrations. Forest Whitaker plays the butler, named Cecil Gaines in the film, while Oprah Winfrey plays his wife.
Of those buying tickets, 39 percent were African-Americans, an especially strong turnout. TWC and other box office observers believe church groups played a key role in driving the film’s opening, noting a large number of advance ticket sales. Major markets where the film overperformed in predominately black theaters include Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, Atlanta and Chicago (Winfrey’s home turf).
“While the biggest numbers came from the larger markets, proportionately the mid- and smaller-sized towns over-indexed, which can be attributable to some extent to the outreach that we did to the faith-based groups,” says Erik Lomis, president of distribution for TWC.

Beyond Timbaland: the future stars of experimental R&B
By Paul Lester
“In the most direct way, we’re trying to be post-Timbaland,” says Kelela Mizanekristos, one of several new female artists operating in the realm of what could be termed experimental R&B. “We’re taking that sound and pushing it. I remember the day I first heard what Timbaland and Aaliyah did – that intersection of her pretty voice and his weird, resonant production. I remember where I was and what I was doing. It was a major situation. We’re trying to continue that legacy.”
Over the past few years, male stars such as Drake, the Weeknd, the-Dream, Frank Ocean, Miguel, Autre Ne Veut and How to Dress Well, have stretched the definition of soul and taken the music to unexpected places. But now the pendulum is swinging back towards women. SZA, Phlo Finister, Kid A, Jhené Aiko, Twigs, Jessy Lanza and Kelela have different influences and approaches, but what they share is a love of R&B at its most forward-looking and futuristic, the sort that was prevalent between the mid 90s and the mid-noughties, when Timbaland, the Neptunes and Rodney Jerkins were in their heyday. Aaliyah, Brandy, Ciara – these are the touchstones for their dreamy yet subtly dislocating dance music. More than anyone, though, it is Cassie Ventura, known simply as Cassie, who has become the figurehead for this new scene, perhaps because she is regarded as the last of an era (what Rihanna et al make is something quite different). So while the world waits for a new Cassie album (she released her one official album in 2006, and despite numerous mooted followups, she has yet to put out a second, with just a mixtape issued earlier this year to satisfy her cult fan base), here are some of the superb young performers occupying the space with their gossamer, glitchy R&B.
