Trans Actress Laverne Cox Breaks New Ground with Orange Is the New Black

There’s something really special happening in television right now. Jenji Kohan’s Orange Is the New Black not only features a nearly all-female cast depicting a diverse spectrum of race, sexuality and body types, but it also includes a trans woman of color actually playing a trans woman of color — a first on mainstream television.

Former reality star and producer Laverne Cox plays Sophia Burset, a firefighter whose wife Crystal is less disturbed by her transition than her decision to steal credit cards. Though trans actors often fall victim to typecasting as sex workers, Cox felt no qualms about playing another kind of deviant: an incarcerated thief. “For me, the fact that she was in jail, that’s not a deterrent. I thought, What an opportunity to tell stories that aren’t really told a lot about trans folks in prison,'” Cox tellsTVGuide.com.

With the debut of Orange, Cox likely became the first trans person many viewers had seen either on TV or in real life and the actress is well aware of the role’s potential benefits to the trans community. By portraying Sophia as a multi-dimensional character — a loving parent, devoted spouse, compassionate friend and determined entrepreneur — Cox hopes the show will help alleviate some of the stigma imposed on trans people. “What I’ve always believed is that if you get to know someone as a human being that everything — all the preconceptions and stereotypes you might have had about them — will fade away. And I think what our writers and the show have done such a great job of is humanizing Sophia so we really understand her as a complicated, flawed human being just like anyone else,” she says.

Ten black former American Idol contestants from various seasons have filed a lawsuit against the show, claiming that they were eliminated from the competition due to a racist ratings scheme, TMZ.com reports.

The plaintiffs — including Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Jacob John Smalley (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell Brittenum (Season 5), Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju’Not Joyner (Season 8) and Chris Golightly (Season 9) — are seeking $25 million each in damages for the show’s alleged discrimination and other misdeeds. They also seek to force Idol to adopt new anti-racism regulations.

American Idol accused of racism by nine former contestants New York attorney James H. Freeman, representing the plaintiffs, says he began investigating the show after Jermaine Jones was kicked off on March 15, 2012, because he didn’t inform producers about multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest. Freeman then discovered that throughout Idol’s then-11-season run, only nine other people had been publically disqualified. And as it turns out, all of them happened to be black.

How BET’s ‘The Game’ Launched a Legal War Over a Facebook Page

In January 2011, the television industry was shocked by the success of BET’s premiere of The Game, which had been canceled by The CW two years earlier.

The show’s premiere attracted 7.7 million viewers, which led to some examination of how a revived series about the lives of professional football players had become so popular. As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter that month, the network exploited social media to generate hype. One woman who was central to the story was Stacey Mattocks, an insurance agent who had created a Facebook page when the show was on The CW and worked to get the show back on air.

On Monday, Mattocks filed a lawsuit against BET, which reveals the struggle she had with the network over her page for the previous two years.

Sprint (NYSE:S) agreed to a contract that will enable it to use Transit Wireless’ distributed antenna system (DAS), which is being rolled out across the New York City subway system. Wireless customers of Sprint and its sub-brands–Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile–can expect to begin receiving coverage underground in the 36 stations already online in midtown Manhattan and Chelsea by early 2014. Sprint will also engage in phase two of Transit’s DAS project, which will comprise 40 new stations including Grand Central Station and is slated for completion in early 2014. Sprint expects to participate as Transit expands DAS coverage to all 277 underground subway stations.

In April, Transit announced that its neutral-host DAS had already signed as anchor tenants AT&T (NYSE:T) and T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS). Sprint and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) were said to be finalizing contracts to deliver their services via the DAS. A follow-up announcement regarding Verizon has yet to be made. Boingo Wireless is also using Transit’s DAS to expand its sponsored Wi-Fi hotspot offering within the New York City subway system.

BlackBerry (originally RIM) laid off 250 more employees on Tuesday as part of a continued effort to turnaround the company.

The layoffs, which were first reported by Bloomberg on Thursday, affected employees at BlackBerry’s product testing facility in its hometown of Waterloo, Canada.

“This is part of the next stage of our turnaround plan to increase efficiencies and scale our company correctly for new opportunities in mobile computing,” a rep for the company told Mashable in a statement. “We will be as transparent as possible as those plans evolve.”

The company recently laid off its VP of sales and reports suggested that more layoffs were coming. BlackBerry fired 5,000 employees in the last fiscal year to cut costs.

U.S. Internet Speed Slows Compared To Other Countries: Report

English: swflash

By Betsy Isaacson

Compared with other tech-savvy nations, Internet service in the U.S. is overpriced and slow. According to a “State of the Internet” report recently put out by content delivery network Akamai, U.S. service is becoming even slower — relative to that of other countries, at least.

The U.S. now has the ninth-fastest average Internet connection speed in the world, behind South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Latvia, the Czech Republic and Sweden. Thats a slip in the rankings: In the last Akamai report, the U.S. was eighth, with faster average connection speeds than Sweden.

Given that Akamai surveys 243 countries to produce its “State of the Internet” report, ninth place might not seem too low. U.S. Internet providers, after all, contend with a bigger landmass — and a larger population — than those in South Korea or Japan. And in real terms, the U.S. average connection speed improved in the interval between reports, becoming 27 percent faster than last year. It just wasnt enough to beat ever-speedier Sweden.

The drop from eighth place might not be worth a worry if it weren’t indicative of bigger problems in the U.S. broadband market. Marguerite Reardon of CNET recently wrote that U.S. cable providers aren’t exactly encouraging consumers to adopt high-speed broadband — “and when they do, they charge significantly higher prices that escalate as you move to faster tiers.”
