Disney renames Mouseketeer stage for Funicello

The stage at Walt Disney Studios where “The Mickey Mouse Club” was filmed is now officially the Annette Funicello Stage.Disney chief Bob Iger led a ceremony Monday dedicating the soundstage to Funicello, the Mouseketeer-turned-movie star who died in April at age 70.Iger confessed to having a crush on Funicello when he was growing up, as many who watched the perky brunette on TV did.Former Mouseketeers, Funicello’s family and colleagues and Mickey Mouse himself also participated in Monday’s dedication. Frankie Avalon, Richard Sherman and Leonard Maltin were among those honoring the late actress.Julie Andrews is the only other entertainer to have a namesake stage at Disney studios.
Paul Giamatti Joins ‘Downton Abbey’

Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of “Downton Abbey” for the show’s upcoming fourth season.
TVLine reports that Giamatti will appear on “Downton Abbey” as Harold Levinson, Cora’s (Elizabeth McGovern) brother in the Season 4 finale, alongside Shirley MacLaine who returns as Cora’s mother Martha. The character is described as a playboy and maverick.
A rep for Masterpiece confirmed TVLine’s report to The Huffington Post. “We’re excited that Paul Giamatti will be joining us on ‘Downton’ to play Cora’s brother Harold, the rather free-spirited uncle to Mary and Edith,” Gareth Neame, managing director of Carnival Films, said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see him work alongside Shirley MacLaine, who are both sure to upset the Grantham’s apple cart in this year’s finale.”

Nick Cannon re-launching ‘Soul Train’ on NBC

At only 32 years old, actor, comedian and TV personality, Nick Cannon seems to be unstoppable.
The husband of pop diva Mariah Carey, currently hosts NBC’s America’s Got Talent, and next month will resurrect his successful improv series Wild ’n Out for MTV’s sister station MTV2.
Over the weekend, Cannon attended the 2013 American Black Film Festival in Miami, where he discussed his ongoing endeavor to be creative on and off-camera.
During an interview with theGrio, Cannon exclusively revealed that he recently struck a deal to bring the musical variety show Soul Train to NBC, via his production company NCredible Entertainment.
“One of the things I’m the most excited about, and we’re just now starting to talk about it is the re-launch of Soul Train and that coming back,” Cannon told theGrio’s Chris Witherspoon. “It means so much for our culture. It truly is something that to be able to bring through my deal at NBC Universal is that in itself is kind of taking it to the next level for where the brand began. I’m excited about that.”
When asked if Soul Train would air on NBC, Cannon responded “Yes, that’s the plan.”
Last year it was reported that Cannon inked a first-look production deal with NBC to develop scripted and unscripted programming for the network.
“Working closely with Paul Telegdy and the folks at NBC has been incredibly rewarding. I am thrilled to expand my role and contributions by creating original programming for the NBC Universal team,” Cannon said.

Sprint shareholders approve SoftBank’s $21.6B offer

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) shareholders overwhelmingly approved Japanese operator SoftBank’s offer to acquire 78 percent of Sprint in a $21.6 billion deal, handing SoftBank and its CEO Masayoshi Son a major victory in SoftBank’s quest to outbid Charlie Ergen’s Dish Network (NASDAQ: DISH).
Sprint said 98 percent of the votes cast at today’s special shareholders meeting voted in favor of the merger agreement with SoftBank, representing around 80 percent of Sprint’s outstanding common stock as of April 18.The FCC still needs to approve the deal, but Sprint and Softbank said they expect the deal to formally close in early July.
Earlier this month SoftBank revised its original proposal to counter Dish’s $25.5 billion counterbid. Dish subsequently abandoned its attempt to get Sprint.
Under the revised deal with SoftBank, Sprint shareholders will get more money and Sprint will get less cash than originally proposed. Sprint shareholders will be paid $5.50 per share instead of $4.02 under the old agreement. SoftBank will get shares from existing Sprint investors for $7.65 per share, up from the previous offer of $7.30.

Hundreds of tourists and New Yorkers show up each day at the famed TKTS booth in the heart of Times Square with questions about Broadway shows. Often they’re very interesting questions.Like: “Can I get a ticket to see the ‘Superman’ musical”? Or, “Are there seats available for ‘The Comedy of Edward Foote”’? And, “What about ‘Cats’? We really want to see ‘Cats.'”To which the answers are: “You probably mean ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ and, yes, tickets are available.” Or, “Might you be actually referring to ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood”’? And finally, “No, sorry, ‘Cats’ closed in 2000.”
