Social Media Posts Urge Americans to Call Incorrect Emergency Number

You may have seen recent posts on social media sites urging people in the U.S. to dial 1-1-2 rather than 9-1-1 in certain emergencies. This is bad advice.

The posts claim that 1-1-2 is especially effective if you are being pulled over in your car and want to ensure that you are dealing with the police. It also claims that by dialing1-1-2, your call will be answered faster and may go directly to the police.

Here are the facts:

FACT: 1-1-2 is the European emergency number. Several wireless providers offer mobile phones that can use either system for emergency calls, depending on the user’s location.

FACT: While dialing 1-1-2 in the United States may work on certain devices and on certain wireless networks, the only way to ensure that your call for emergency assistance gets through is to dial 9-1-1. When a caller tries to use 1-1-2 in the United States, the call may not go through. Even if it does, 1-1-2 provides no special emergency call handling – in fact, it adds a delay due to it having to be converted to “9-1-1” and then routed to the appropriate 9-1-1 call center.

FACT: No one should ever call 1-1-2 just to “test” if it works; you’ll tie up public safety resources and waste valuable time for people facing real emergencies.

The bottom line is that anyone calling for emergency assistance in the United States or Canada should always dial 9-1-1 for the fastest and most effective response.

Random Thoughts

thoughtsThe Catholic Church needs Pope Francis. Jorge Mario Bergoglio knows exactly what he is doing by choosing the name Francis. Pope Francis has already demonstrated by action what type of Pope he wants to be. All Catholics need to learn about St. Francis of Assisi and St. Francis Xavier.  The blueprint of what Pope Francis wants to do and take the Church is in the example of the lives of these two men.

Am I the ONLY one going thru Scandal withdrawal? Next Thursday is going to be like Christmas for all of us dedicated gladiators!

Message to all Republicans: The Southern Strategy has failed! The GOP will become the 21st century Whig party if it does not take its head out of its ass and become more inclusive, holistic, and socially conscious.

Pat Boone needs some Mylanta and a sedative. He is an example of what I stated above. But in his defense, he still believes that the South will rise again. He’s not the only one though.

Do you realize the budget Paul Ryan has proposed slashes spending to 1948 levels? Think about that for a moment and how that will personally affect you.

Violence in our communities must end! We must give ourselves and our youth hope, jobs, and a quality education!

I loved Sen.  Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) exchange with Sen. Ted Cruz during the debate over assault weapons during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday.  It reminded me of when an elder would tell a child to pick out their own switch and begin to spank them saying, “Respect your elders!”

Sen.  Rob Portman’s (R-OH) change of position on gay marriage (his son came out to him) is similar to St. Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. What an analogy! Sorry, my mind sometimes works that way.

Never say you will do something and don’t. In the end, your word is the only thing you truly have.

Have you ever known someone who brightens your day every time you see or hear from them? Isn’t it great?

The NYPD needs to rethink their directive to run criminal checks on the victims of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is notorious for being not reported or under reported.  In 2000, 1,247 women and 440 men were killed by an intimate partner according to Bureau of Justice Statistics.

While the NYPD is on my mind, there has to be a thorough investigation done regarding the Kimani Gray shooting. There has to be a realization made that racism still exists therefore racist officers still exist. I understand that the job is an extremely difficult one and I want every officer to return safely from their tours each and every day but, there has to be something done to prevent the Kimani Gray’s, Sean Bell’s  and Amadou Diallo’s from happening.

Moving on to the KCPD, when a person have reports that they have been robbed and shot in a predominantly African-American economically depressed area of the city, detectives should never conclude that the person shot himself just to close a case.  When a crime has been committed it is your sworn duty to investigate it fully and to not assume out of expediency and the lack of finding a shell casing.

Carnival Cruise Lines has some major problems. According to NPR, three ships in their fleet have experienced notable malfunctions. All of this is after the Carnival Triumph fiasco. I believe Carnival may want to consider “dry-docking” their fleet until their maintenance quality issues are addressed.  Either that or lose what little public credibility they have left. The brand has suffered significant damage. The $37 million Carnival earned in the first-quarter can easily turn into a $75 million loss for the year.

A plan without action is just wasted time.

Have you ever watched the TLC television show, “Strange Addiction?” It’s not just strange, it’s cray cray.

Ang Lee takes on first TV project

Ang Lee

15 March 2013

Oscar-winning film director Ang Lee is branching out into television, after it was announced he will direct the pilot episode of new series, Tyrant.

The show marks Lee’s first project since the 2012 film Life of Pi, which saw the Taiwanese filmmaker win his second Academy Award last month.

Tyrant follows an ordinary American family caught up in the affairs of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation.

Shooting for the show on US cable channel FX will begin this summer.

The team behind the drama includes Homeland’s Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff, who will act as executive producers.

“Ang Lee has demonstrated time and again an ability to present characters with such depth and specificity that they reveal the universal human condition,” said FX president John Landgraf in a statement.

Lee, whose previous credits include the martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Jane Austen adaptation Sense and Sensibility and comic book blockbuster Hulk, saw his latest film win a total of four Oscars in February.

Aside from best director, the 3D film – based on the Booker-winning novel about a shipwrecked boy and a Bengal tiger – won awards for cinematography, score and visual effects.

The director, 58, won his first best director Oscar in 2006, for cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain.

Comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3

With the Samsung Galaxy S4 finally unveiled, we pit its specs against those of its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. After all, a little sibling rivalry never hurt.

No matter you’re deciding if you should wait and get the Samsung Galaxy S4, making sure you don’t have buyer’s remorse from just having purchased your Galaxy S3, or perhaps just plain curious, CNET makes it easy to compare the two sibling handsets with this chart.

Physically, the GS4 didn’t get any bigger. In fact, it even sports a thinner build and weighs a hair lighter. But with a slimmer bezel, its 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED touch screen had room to expand, and the display now sports a higher pixel density.

Also new is its quad- or octo-core processor. Similar to the situation when the GS3 debuted, what CPU is available will depend on where you live.

Both cameras also got a bump, with the rear shooter jumping from 8-megapixel to 13-megapixel. Other changes include running the newer Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (as expected), a beefed up battery, and a slew of new software features. And if you want to see how the GS4 compares to other flagship handsets, be sure to read our other chart.
