Laura Izibor- If Tonight Is My Last

I really dig this song! I really like Laura Izibor. We tend to always be on the merry-go-round of life and never FULLY enjoy life. Live everyday as though it is your last. Have no fear of life.

Schoolhouse Rock: Mother Necessity

This series was some of the best educational programming EVER on network television. It is timeless and I along with millions of other kids in the 70’s grew up on this. Take a moment to reminisce, call the kids to the computer, and maybe take some notes because you forgot the subject. Don’t worry though, next Saturday the Soul Brother will post another episode.

Geto Boys- Mind Playing Tricks On Me

I used to jam this on my Walkman in the subways in NYC. This song is timeless. The message it sends is just as relevant today as it was back in the ’90’s.

Unlimited Vacation Time Not A Dream For Some

This is interesting. I wish all employers could offer this benefit. I already know there would be some who would scream that it would lower productivity or that some employees would abuse the privilege. Both arguments are valid but I believe the benefit would actually increase productivity. Unlimited vacation would foster loyalty and higher performance from staffs. Abuses to unlimited vacation policies? Isn’t that what progressive discipline is for? Up to and including termination.

Mass Incarceration for Troubled Black Youth

Chris Jack Hill illuminates a problem that needs to be addressed. First, we need to establish and fund more programs for youth to keep them out of the legal system. Secondly, we need to improve the educational system of the country. Thirdly, parents need to parent. There’s nothing wrong with discipline and instilling children with an expectation of a certain behavior and morality in their interactions with the world. The only thing mass incarceration of youth do is prepare them and us for mass incarceration of adults.

Revealing the racial makeup of California’s foreclosures

I am sure that if this study included the rest of the lower 48 states we all would be shocked and saddened even more than the results California provided alone. It is a fact that the economic crisis has hit minority families the hardest. We want a part of the American dream and that would be home ownership. Banks being unethical, immoral, and irresponsible created insolvent loan vehicles that in some respects unfairly targeted persons who just wanted a piece of the dream. When the Wall Street domino fell it accelerated an already dicey economic situation and plunged it to the brink of collapse. That will not change overnight. It took eight years to create and may take just as long to correct.

Support the NAACP

This article was written by Shirley Sherrod and appears in The Afro. It is an eloquent piece about “Sherrodgate” and the NAACP. More importantly, she lays out in a very personal way why the NAACP is important for all Americans who fight against injustice, racism, poverty, and inequality. Read it, let it soak in your consciousness, and support the NAACP and every organization that stands for the same.
