Be Aware

This article stirs very deep emotions. We need to be aware of those in our circle. Those in our family. Those we love. If we have any suspicions speak up and talk with the person. Help that person get the help they need. It’s not love to ignore a person in emotional pain. It’s not love to help them get the help they need. Many times it’s just the ability to listen other times it may take a professional intervention. I have visited that deep dark place and have stayed there. I have considered the thought that maybe life in this existence is not worth it. I was lucky, I realized that is not normal and sought help. I am a survivor. Some people are not that fortunate. Read this very emotional, stirring, and brave article from Michel Martin via NPR….

Rainbows

This morning when I got to the car I noticed it had rained last night. Like every morning I start the car and sit for a minute to allow for all the fluids to start moving and the engine warm. I then begin my ritual prayer of, “Please Lord do not let anyone get on my nerves at work, let me have a serene, peaceful and productive day, keep me from breaking the 2nd and 5th Commandments and from committing any moral or venial sin…..” As I pulled out and got to the interstate I noticed a rainbow.

Rainbows in the Bible are a symbol of the promise of God to humanity not to ever destroy his creation. The rainbow to me today meant the promise of God that things will get better. To trust in God to bring you through rough times can be difficult. That rainbow today reminded me that God has my back and that He may not give you what you want but what you need. He is never late in his blessings, He is always right on time.

Have a great day today and look for your rainbow! Maybe, you will find your pot of gold.

Birmingham, 1963 to Detroit, 2010- The tragedy of bombed and brutalized black girls

This is a fantastic and provocative article. How far have we really come in this nation when it comes to race relations?

A Boy of Summer? Naw, I’m a Champion of Fall

This month has been a great month on this note, I have been able to watch my team the New York Yankees five times including tonight.

That may seem silly to you. I will accept that. This is the first time that I can remember since moving to Kansas City, MO (not Kansas, please note) that my team has been on television. The NBA is holding its playoffs and that’s great too. I have tuned into every game of the playoffs, except for the time this week that the NBA got bumped for my beloved New York Yankees vs. the evil Boston Red Sox.

I know it is the Yankees are World Champions. I know it is the fact that networks can make tons of revenue by airing nationally the Yankees versus Boston, Tampa Bay, and the cross town New York Mets. I know that the Kansas City Royals sucks and have sucked since George Brett retired. Okay, Royals fans let’s be honest about that one. Remember the pine tar game?

The Yankees are my team. I grew up in the Bronx not far from the House that Ruth built. I remember being in the old Yankee Stadium as a kid with my Dad during a playoff game against the Angels. I loved it! I still don’t understand how my father fell asleep during the game and all the accompanying noise, but on that day my father taught me a lasting life lesson about sacrifice and love. It was a double-header in the middle of a heat wave years later as a teen my brothers and I sat in the bleachers and watched Reggie Jackson return to the stadium he inaugurated years earlier with three home runs in game six of the 1977 World Series except, he was now wearing the enemy’s uniform. It was on that Sunday afternoon that I learned the hard way that dark people can sunburn too!

It’s the late summer and fall when baseball really come alive. I guess I could be a boy of summer. I know I am a  Champion of Fall. That is the time when after 182 games the Yankees become the Monsters they are. They ratchet up their performances. They smell the thrill of the kill in destroying their opponents to meet their goal of getting “The Ring.” The fall is the season that as a fan is the best time. You have watched or in my case, followed the Yankees by internet, newspaper, and Blackberry app all this time and here is the payoff…the playoffs and World Series. Let’s be honest, late September and October New York, in Yankee Stadium is not the warmest. To truly be a fan is to have the ability to go to the Stadium dressed for the weather in October.

The Yankees brings me back to an earlier, innocent, happier time in my life. A life free of the stresses and pressure of everyday life. Am I a boy of summer? Naw, I’m a Champion of Fall.

Is that all? Is all forgiven?

I wrote this originally in December, 2009 and posted it to my original blog site. With the recent release of Raymond Towler this month after spending 30 years in prison for a crime DNA tests proved he did not commit, I feel this is a good time to repost this commentary:

This week in Florida, James Bain was exonerated and released from prison after spending 35 years incarcerated for a crime he never committed. Mr. Bain was convicted in 1974 and sentenced to life for allegedly kidnapping and raping a child.
Today’s DNA testing technologies categorically excluded Mr. Bain from having committed the horrendous crime.

Only after attorneys with the Innocence Project took up the case last year did a judge order DNA testing of the evidence. Prior to this every petition made making the same request was denied.

The Innocence Project was founded in 1992 and according to their website is “dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.” Thus far the organization has exonerated 248 persons, 27 in 2009 alone.

Mr. Bain was 19 years old when he was convicted, today he is 54.
In 2001 the state of Florida passed the Victims of Wrongful Incarceration Act. The statute defines wrongful incarceration and provides a detailed set of guidelines a person would need to meet to receive monetary compensation of $50,000 for each year wrongfully incarcerated.

For James Bain that amounts to $1,750,000.

$1,750,000 and all is forgiven? The state took (stole) 35 years of a man’s life by mistake. That is one helluva oops! He was only 19 when he was incarcerated. Think for a moment what you were doing at 19 and then of all the experiences you have had since. That is just a blip of what Mr. Bain has not experienced, and the experiences he did have maybe unimaginable to those who have never been incarcerated.

Now think about these facts from the US Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics Bulletin of Prisoners in 2008:

  • As of December 31, 2008 the prison population stood at 2,474,279 persons.
  • Roughly 1 in every 133 US residents was in the custody of a state, federal, or local jail.
  • The imprisonment rate for men was highest for those aged 30 to 34, followed by those aged 25 to 29.
  • Women aged 35 to 39 made up the largest percentage of female prisoners, followed by those aged 30 to 34.
  • Of all sentenced prisoners under state and federal jurisdiction approximately 38% are Black, 34% White, and 20% Hispanic.
  • Men are incarcerated at a rate 15 times higher than Women.
  • Black Men are incarcerated at a 6 1/2 time higher rate than White men.
  • According to the International Center for Prison Studies at Kings College, London UK the United States leads the world in incarcerated persons. (By the way, China is a very distant 2nd.)

How many persons now incarcerated is actually guilty of the crime they have been convicted of? How come justice is not blind? What happened to knowing right from wrong? What happened to educational and economic advancement opportunity? How many other James Bain’s are in the shitsdom and will NEVER get a fair hearing? Is $1,750,000 enough to regain a lifetimes worth of experiences? Is $1,750,000 enough to pay Mr. Bain’s legal bills prior to the Innocence Project? Are we as a society hell-bent on vengeance, retribution, and has embraced an “eye for an eye” mentality abandoning truth and fairness?

Hmmmm……..
