People who spend three decades in the U.S. military before retiring from the Pentagon at the rank of colonel are not supposed to end up living in a van and unable to find even a menial job to provide the kind of basic income that might save them from from homelessness. Yet that’s where retired Air Force Col. Robert Freniere finds himself in now, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Julie Zauzmer.

Freniere enlisted in the Army just after the Vietnam War ended, transferring to the Air Force shortly thereafter. A quarter-century and four combat zones of service later, he’d risen far enough through the ranks to be pulled into the Pentagon. In 2002, he began to serve as an assistant to Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who was already one of the top officials in the U.S. armed forces and who would go on to be the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan before resigning after making unprofessional remarks about President Obama to reporters.

After a few years working for McChrystal, Freniere retired in 2006. Finding work was hard. Debts amassed during his career — some personal, others relating to his two children in college — meant that his $40,000 annual pension from the Air Force didn’t make ends meet.

Obama called the N-word in headline

The WHAT in the White House?

Well-heeled West Villagers will be in for a rude surprise when they open the latest copy of their local newspaper and see the headline, “The N—-r in the White House” — except without the dashes.

The shocking headline in the WestView News is a reference to President Obama and sits at the top of Page 15 above an opinion piece that criticizes what it calls the anti-black “racism” of far-right voters.

The convoluted screed by author and journalist James Lincoln Collier is actually a pro-Obama piece — but that didn’t stop West Villagers from decrying the printing of the slur.

“It’s disrespectful in any context to refer to the president of the United States as the N-word,” said one West Villager, Eugene May.

“If you were quoting something or referring to the historic context of the word being used, I can understand the justification,” said May, 31.

Note: Just for perspective, It has been:

238 years since “All men are created equal…”

151 years since the Emancipation Proclamation.

149 years since ratification of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

146 years since ratification of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

144 years since ratification of the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

66 years since Presidential Executive Order 9981.

60 years since Brown v. Board of Education.

50 years since the Civil Rights Act and the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

40 years since the Voting Rights Act and Presidential  Executive Order 11246.

The “great experiment” of America has only recently in its history attempted to right the wrongs of racism. The struggle continues. This country has not achieved a “post-racial” society. I fear it may never because racism and prejudice is the result of people in FEAR. To use the N-word for “shock and awe” value and to get attention is reprehensible. To use any slur of any community is reprehensible. The disrespect that has been shown to the Office of the President of the United States during the term of Barack Obama has been a shameful example of the cancer with the body of America.

When will this country be able to live up to its founding document? Will it ever?  ~ SB
