Doctors Slam Proposed Food Stamp Cuts: ‘The Dumbest Thing You Can Do Is Cut Nutrition’

Doctors have a message for congressional lawmakers inching toward a compromise farm bill that would cut food stamps by nine billion dollars: It’s a terrible idea.

“If you’re interested in saving health care costs, the dumbest thing you can do is cut nutrition,” Dr. Deborah Frank of Boston Medical Center explained in an interview with the Associated Press. “People don’t make the hunger-health connection.”

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers benefits to over 47 million Americans. But the benefit level has fallen to the point that recipients only get about $1.40 per person per meal, even though food stamps often constitute the entirety of a family’s food budget. Doctors and researchers say that additional cuts on the horizon could increase the incidence of medical problems stemming in part from food insecurity, particularly diabetes and its related conditions.

For instance, a 2013 study by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts estimated that House Republican proposals to slash food stamps would increase national health costs for diabetes treatment by $15 billion over a decade. Those costs would disproportionately affect Medicaid, since the public insurance program for the poor — who are considerably more likely to have type%

Target Says 70 Million Individuals’ Data May Have Been Stolen

By Mark Memmott

300px-Illinois_Target_Store[1]The size of the data breach at Target Co. stores late last year took a sharp rise Friday when the retailer said it now estimates that up to 70 million individuals may have had information that includes their “names, mailing addresses, phone numbers or email addresses” stolen. Previously, as we have reported, Target had said that “approximately 40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been impacted” when its customers’ accounts were hacked during the height of the holiday shopping season. In its statement Friday morning, the retailer says:

— “As part of Target’s ongoing forensic investigation, it has been determined that certain guest information — separate from the payment card data previously disclosed — was taken during the data breach.”

— “This theft is not a new breach, but was uncovered as part of the ongoing investigation.”

— “Guests will have zero liability for the cost of any fraudulent charges arising from the breach. To provide further peace of mind, Target is offering one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all guests who shopped our U.S. stores. Guests will have three months to enroll in the program. Additional details will be shared next week. To learn more, please go to target.com/databreach.”

Medical Bills Are The Number One Cause Of Bankruptcy In America

By Kimberly Gedeon

imagesAmericans just can’t seem to get a grip on paying their mortgages or credit card bills due to outstanding medical charges. Even with health insurance supplementing the costs, medical bills are the biggest cause of bankruptcies in the U.S., reports CNBC.

Unpaid medical bills are expected to drive nearly two million Americans to file for bankruptcy this year, a study by NerdWallet Health said. The findings also show that 56 million people — 20 percent of the U.S. population between the ages of 19 and 64 — will find financial hardship due to healthcare costs.

While most people assume credit card debt is the primary culprit behind bankruptcies, the towering debt is actually caused by skyrocketing health costs. “More than 11 million people will take on additional credit-card debt to cover mounting medical bills, ” CNBC added.

NerdWallet found that 10 million Americans will not be able to cover food, rent, and utilities due to these medical expenses.

Racism May Accelerate Aging in African American Men

By University of Maryland

A new University of Maryland-led study reveals that racism may impact aging at the cellular level. Researchers found signs of accelerated aging in African American men who reported high levels of racial discrimination and who had internalized anti-Black attitudes. Findings from the study, which is the first to link racism-related factors and biological aging, are published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Racial disparities in health are well-documented, with African Americans having shorter life expectancy, and a greater likelihood of suffering from aging-related illnesses at younger ages compared to whites. Accelerated aging at the biological level may be one mechanism linking racism and disease risk.

“We examined a biomarker of systemic aging, known as leukocyte telomere length,” explained Dr. David H. Chae, assistant professor of epidemiology at UMD\’s School of Public Health and the study’s lead investigator. Shorter telomere length is associated with increased risk of premature death and chronic disease such as diabetes, dementia, stroke and heart disease. “We found that the African American men who experienced greater racial discrimination and who displayed a stronger bias against their own racial group had the shortest telomeres of those studied,” Chae explained.

Telomeres are repetitive sequences of DNA capping the ends of chromosomes, which shorten progressively over time – at a rate of approximately 50-100 base pairs annually. Telomere length is variable, shortening more rapidly under conditions of high psychosocial and physiological stress. “Telomere length may be a better indicator of biological age, which can give us insight into variations in the cumulative ‘wear and tear’ of the organism net of chronological age,” said Chae. Among African American men with stronger anti-black attitudes, investigators found that average telomere length was 140 base pairs shorter in those reporting high vs. low levels of racial discrimination; this difference may equate to 1.4 to 2.8 years chronologically.

A more liberal America will emerge, but it isn’t going to happen overnight

By Michael Cohen

Oh to be a liberal in America today. In New York City, a Democrat has finally been elected mayor after a 24-year absence from City Hall – and he’s a dyed-in-the-wool liberal. Gay marriage is legal in 18 states including, most bizarrely, Utah, one of the most conservative states. The minimum wage is going up around the country and you can even smoke a joint in Colorado. Obamacare, for all its speedbumps over the past few weeks, is the law of the land; the Senate filibuster just took a big hit (and along with it Republican obstructionism); a nuclear deal with Iran is in the works and even Obama is talking about the scourge of income inequality.

Everything, it seems, is coming up roses.

But before progressives start donning their Che Guevera T-shirts and popping their artisanal champagne corks the liberal moment is coming face to face with a difficult reality: conservatives are not going down without a fight.

In fact, just over a year since President Obama was re-elected and it seemed the country was moving in a more progressive direction, Republicans have thwarted much of his agenda and 2014 (as well as 2015 and 2016) promises more of the same.

Politico Is Twitter’s Foremost Punchline Today

By Akoto Ofori-Atta

POLITICO NO LINESOn Sunday, MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry doubled down on her apology to the Romneys for using their family photo in a segment of her “Look Back In Laughter” episode, which aired at the end of last month.

In his defense of Harris-Perry (catch up on the entire brouhaha here), the Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates referred to her as “America’s foremost public intellectual.” Politico’s Dylan Byers seems to disagree:

Ta-Nehisi Coates’s claim that “Melissa Harris-Perry is America’s foremost public intellectual” sort of undermines his intellectual cred, no?

Dylan Byers (@DylanByers) January 7, 2014

Byers was quickly asked to explain his tweet, and to offer up the names of intellectuals he deems worthy of that distinction. His suggestions were all white men, and one dead white woman:

Bernard Lewis, Noam Chomsky, Jeffrey Sachs, Paul Krugman (tho not anymore), E.O. Wilson… Obviously Sontag before she died cc @Mattyglesias

Dylan Byers (@DylanByers) January 7, 2014

And then there’s this:

@mattyglesias I’m not sure America has a foremost public intellectual under any definition, but it certainly isn’t a weekend MSNBC hostDylan Byers (@DylanByers) January 7, 2014

So Byers is entirely sure that there is such a thing as “America’s foremost intellectiual,” but he’s confident that Harris-Perry doesn’t fit the bill. Why? Well, we could ask why, why, and delve deep into a conversation about racism, sexism and a history of the dismissal of black women and their intellectual contributions. But let Byers tell it, and Coates’ put his credibility (!) on the line by vouching for Harris-Perry because she’s a weekend host at MSNBC.
