A dialogue must begin between the Republican Party and African-Americans. The question is, Will anyone listen? This is a great piece from Sophia A. Nelson on a very provocative topic. In my experience being black and a Democrat is a learned, generational experience. My grandmother was a Democrat, my parents are Democrats, my older sisters Democrats, so I became a Democrat. Yet, to the chagrin of my peers I voted Republican for President Ronald Reagan’s second term. I have been Independent for ten years now, because neither party consistently follows up with action the topics that most interest me. Republican’s and Democrat’s for that matter must first begin to end the attacking, partisan, and divisive tactics. African-Americans must engage and educate themselves in the political process and teach their children the same. Finally, the Republican party must actively engage and advance African-Americans and their concerns openly and legislatively before engaging in dialogue with our community. In this regard, I am from the “show me state,” actions will speak louder than words.
