McKinney, Texas, and the Racial History of American Swimming Pools

By Yoni Appelbaum

On Friday, a large group of teens gathered for a pool party in the city of McKinney, Texas. Shortly thereafter, someone called the police. And by Sunday night, as footage of the police response spread across the internet, the McKinney Police Department announced it was placing Eric Casebolt, the patrol supervisor shown in the video, on administrative leave.

It is the latest in a string of incidents of police using apparently excessive force against African Americans that has captured public attention. And it took place at a communal pool—where, for more than a century, conflicts over race and class have often surfaced.

The video shows a foul-mouthed police corporal telling the young men he encounters to get down, and the young women to take off, although far more obscenely. When several seated young men appear to ask, politely, for permission to leave, he explodes at them: “Don’t make me fucking run around here with thirty pounds of goddamn gear in the sun because you want to screw around out here.” The corporal was white. The young people he detained were, almost without exception, black.

The video next shows him repeatedly cursing at a group of young women, telling them to move on. Then he wrestles one to the ground. As bystanders react in horror, and several rush toward the young woman as if to her assistance, he draws his sidearm. They flee. He returns to the teenager, wrestles her back down, forces her face into the ground, and places both knees on her back.

The McKinney police said, in a statement, that they were called to respond to the Craig Ranch North Community Pool for a report of  “a disturbance involving multiple juveniles at the location, who do not live in the area or have permission to be there, refusing to leave.” They added that additional calls reported fighting, and that when the crowd refused to comply with the first responding officers, nine additional units were deployed.

The mayor, Brian Loughmiller, described himself as “disturbed and concerned,” and the police chief vowed “a complete, and thorough, investigation.”

Like many flourishing American suburbs, McKinney has struggled with questions of equity and diversity. The city is among the fastest-growing in America, and its residents hail from a wide range of backgrounds. Formal, legal segregation is a thing of the past. Yet stark divides persist.

It’s dismally apparent that some black lives matter more than others

By Emma Dabiri

It’s dismally apparent that some black lives matter more than others | Emma Dabiri | Comment is free | The Guardian

Following the killings of unarmed men and boys such as Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner and Walter Scott, the United States is entering what’s being called a new civil rights movement, with activists ensuring that the world now knows about the ongoing onslaught against black life.Movements such as #BlackLivesMatter have been huge in their reach, spreading far beyond the US and capturing the imaginations of people of all colours and nationalities. In November, as many as 5,000 protesters marched in London to condemn the grand jury decision not to prosecute the police officer who shot unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Patrisse Cullors, one of the creators of #BlackLivesMatters, said: “We are in a historical moment where we can make great shifts inside and outside US borders to ensure that #BlackLivesMatter around the world.”

But do all black lives really matter? In contrast to the thousands who protested at the US embassy in London, far fewer organised for the 900 Africans who drowned in the Mediterranean last month. So where are the protests to demand that European governments deal with this situation in a humane way?

In fact, after weeks in which viewers have been gripped by the tragic human stories of those fleeing for a better life across the Mediterranean, it seems that hearts are now hardening. British home secretary Theresa May stated uncategorically last week that “economic migrants” fleeing across the Mediterranean should be forcibly returned to Africa, slamming the door on accepting as few as 2,309 migrants under the EU’s suggested resettlement plan.

And this week EU ministers agreed to launch a sea and air mission to destroy the people traffickers’ boats. Britain is expected to offer drones and surveillance equipment. Libya, where most migrants begin their sea crossing, has already described this development as “very worrying”, believing that innocent fishermen could fall victim to the EU military.

Cleveland Verdict: Where the Threat of Blackness Prevails

By Charles F. Coleman Jr.

137 rounds. 49 shots from one gun. 2 unarmed black victims dead.

Not guilty.

Perhaps the most chilling element of the verdict in the case of Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo, charged with the voluntary manslaughter of two unarmed black suspects, was a mainstay phrase uttered by Judge John P. O’Donnell in his bench verdict: “reasonably perceived threat of bodily harm.”

And what was the perceived threat that officer Brelo felt when he fired through the windshield after 100 bullets had already pierced their car? The skin color of the two suspects.? Their blackness?

The facts of the case revealed that Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams’ car backfired before they led police on a 22-mile chase in November of 2012 that ultimately ended in the parking lot of a school where 13 officers, Brelo being one of them, opened fire on the car. Brelo exited his police vehicle, began firing, then climbed on the hood of the car with Russell and Williams inside and fired downward into the car’s windshield at least 15 times. In the end, there were over 137 shots fired by the police, 49 by Brelo, and not a single round was returned by either Russell or Williams. No guns were ever found in their car.

137 rounds. 49 shots from one gun. 2 unarmed black victims dead.

Incomprehensible.

WATCH: Black Activist Politely Schools CNN on Racism—’Whiteness Gets Nuance; Blackness Doesn’t’

By David Edwards

Social activist Deray McKesson criticized the media over the weekend for the way they had handled a white biker shootout in Texas with “nuance,” but black rioters in Baltimore who did not kill anyone were not “humanized” in the same way.

In an interview on Sunday, McKesson explained to CNN host Brian Stelter than he had quit his job as a school administrator after Michael Brown was killed.

“The reason that I quit was that I want to figure out how to use my skills and talent to fight in this space because you just can’t kill people,” he said. “All the work that I did in education was important, but kids have to be alive to learn.”

McKesson slammed the media for what he called “a constant pathologizing of black bodies,” which gave the impression that “when black people assemble, it’s always criminal.”

“What you saw in St. Louis, the police were literally attacking protesters, and that wasn’t always the narrative that was put out by the mainstream media,” he noted. “What you saw in Baltimore sometimes, you saw people sort of focusing on the property damage and not actually people actually focusing on what caused the unrest in the first place.”

“So when I see broadcasts, news articles that present the police narrative as true,” McKesson added before being interrupted.

“But it is oftentimes true,” Stelter insisted.

“Is it true?” McKesson asked. “I don’t know if it was true with Mike Brown. Maybe we differ on what true means.”

Letter tells LI black family: ‘YOU DON’T BELONG HERE’

By Tobias Salinger

An anonymous racist sent a hate note to an African-American family on Long Island, telling them: “YOU DON’T BELONG HERE.”

Ronica Copes, 37, a resident of Lindenhurst in Babylon, found the typewritten, all-capital letter message in an addressed envelope in her mailbox Thursday afternoon, she told Newsday.

“ATTN: AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILY,” begins the letter, which she later posted to Facebook. “THIS IS COMING FROM LINDENHURST COMMUNITY.”

“LINDENHURST IS 84% WHITE POPULATION. YOU DON’T BELONG HERE!!! PLEASE LEAVE LINDENHURST AS SOON AS YOU CAN. IT WILL BE BETTER FOR ALL OF US.”

“FIND THE TOWN WHERE THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU,” the note ends, according to WCBS-TV. “SORRY IF THIS IS RUDE, BUT IT’S THE TRUTH.”

Suffolk County Police are investigating the correspondence as a possible hate crime, according to Newsday. Copes has lived in her house with her mother, her two siblings and five nieces and nephews since September 2013, but she told the publication she hasn’t experienced any racism firsthand in the community.

Copes’ mother, Darcell, told WNBC-TV the note has jolted the family.

As killings continue, May becomes city’s deadliest month since 1999

By Luke Broadwater

Baltimore_Police_Department_logo_patchHours after Baltimore’s mayor huddled with police officials to discuss the recent spike in violence, two more people were killed Monday — making May the city’s deadliest month since 1999.

The two homicides increased this month’s total to 35. There have been 108 homicides across the city this year.

“It’s deplorable,” said City Councilman William “Pete” Welch. “The shootings and killings are all over the city. I don’t think any part of the city is immune to this. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is “disheartened and frustrated by this continuing violence, particularly when you think about the progress that the city has made,” said her spokesman, Howard Libit.

The mayor met for nearly two hours Sunday with Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts and members of his command staff about adjustments police are making. “She is confident that the steps being taken by the Police Department will quell this latest uptick in violence,” Libit said.

Batts wrote a letter to community leaders and elected officials Monday, telling them he has reassigned “several veteran leaders” to the city’s Western District, including a new commander and captain. He said he’s asking officers to maintain “a visible and consistent presence” in the community. He also assigned Lt. Col. Melvin Russell, who commands the Police Department’s Community Partnership Division, to work out of the Western District to improve relations with residents.

In the letter, Batts said the city is “in the midst of a challenging time. … Please be assured that the Baltimore Police Department is moving aggressively to both address the increase inviolence, as well [as] to modernize and better equip ourselves for the future.”

Cleveland Reaches Settlement With Justice Department Over Police Conduct

By Mitch Smith and Matt Apuzzo

The city of Cleveland has reached a settlement with the Justice Department over what federal authorities said was a pattern of unconstitutional policing and excessive use of force, people briefed on the case said Monday.

The settlement, which could be announced as early as Tuesday, comes days after a judge declared a Cleveland police officer not guilty of manslaughter for climbing onto the hood of a car and firing repeatedly at its unarmed occupants, both of them black. The verdict prompted hours of protests and reignited discussions about how police officers treat the city’s African-American residents.

For Cleveland, a settlement avoids a long and costly court fight and the appearance that city leaders are resisting change. Mayor Frank Jackson faces a recall petition from city activists who say, among other grievances, that he has not done enough to prevent police abuses. The Justice Department has called him a full partner in its effort to improve the police department.

The details of the settlement were not immediately clear, but in similar negotiations in recent years, the Justice Department has insisted that cities allow independent monitors to oversee changes inside police departments. Settlements are typically backed by court orders and often call for improved training and revised use-of-force policies.

Putting keys in freezer could prevent car break-ins

By Dan Yesenosky

Where you leave your keys inside your home could make your car the target of a break-in.

The problem: As vehicles become more technologically advanced, thieves are becoming technologically savvy, too.”

Just as quickly as the cars are coming up with these technologies, we have criminals out there trying to combat it and find ways around it,” said Officer Chris Kopp of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina.

Cars with a hands-free key fobs typically unlock a car within about 30 centimeters, said Dave Yelverton, a spokesman for AAA Carolinas.

“Your car is continually trying to reach out and touch this key,” Yelverton said. “And when it finds the key, you can open the door without touching the car without using the key. You can just leave it in your pocket.”

Weave Loans Are A Thing That’s Really Happening

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 8.59.24 PMWe support women wearing their hair exactly how they want to. If your choice is straight, curly, weaved, or bald, feel confident about your decision and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. But I must admit this commercial for The Weave Loan Store in Detroit raised an eyebrow.

It’s estimated that Black women spend a total of half a trillion dollars on our hair annually, so, of course, a business dedicated entirely to financing hair seems like a logical (?) next step. But you’ve got to worry that this will be yet another way for predatory lenders to trap Black women. No, we’re not the only people who wear weaves, but the unintended consequences are concerning.

I was hoping this entire thing was skillful satire, but they’ve posted a real phone number and address with the video.

Take a look at the commercial below.
