After falling for five consecutive years, the number of violent crimes across the United States rose by 1.2% in 2012. Based on data published by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the increase was even greater in some of America’s largest cities. In 2012, for the third year in a row, Flint, Michigan had the highest violent crime rate in the country.
According to the FBI, violent crime includes murder, nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. In some cases, the cities with the highest violent crime rate, including Flint and Oakland, had high rates in all four categories. However, most of the most violent cities tend to do very poorly only in a few categories. Based on the FBI Uniform Crime Report, these are the 10 most dangerous cities in America.

If the revelations that Verizon (and perhaps other telcomms) is handing over customer call records to the federal government has you scrambling for your tinfoil hat, there is a simple way to make sure those government spies have no idea who you are calling.
It’s called a prepaid phone. Also known as burner phones.
Walk into a store that sells prepaid SIM cards. I bought an Ultra Mobile SIM for just $35 last week and paid in cash. Pick up an unlocked phone—there are tons of them on Amazon and eBay. I bought a basic GSM phone without a plan for $25 at Costco earlier this year. Since you will be ditching the phone every so often (since phones can be traced), the simpler the device, the better.

Large-scale collection of call records data by the government is not new, as there were reports of similar programs under the%

Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile may not have been required to particpate in the NSAs phone surveillance program.Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal today reported that the NSA may have exempted T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless from the program for their foreign ownership. T-Mobile is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, and Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon and Vodafone. And while the NSA may not be collecting the information directly from those companies, the Journal notes that U.S. intelligence likely still captures information and metadata from 99 percent of U.S. phone traffic, as nearly all call eventually travel over networks owened by U.S. companies that work with the NSA. AT&T and Sprint Nextel are both believed to have cooperated with the NSA for some time. The governments reluctance to snoop on companies with foreign ties raises questions about how security organizations will proceed as companies from outside the United States seek to invest in the wireless industry. Japanese carrier Softbank is currently in a heated bidding battle with Dish Network to acquire Sprint. Todays revelations are part of an on-going story that broke last week as part of leaks provided to the Guardian by Edward Snowden, a CIA employee who is now in hiding in Hong Kong. Snowden provided
