Fox Announces 24 Revival, American Idol Shakeups

By Liz Raftery

24-TV Show Jack BauerIt’s official: Jack’s back! Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly announced on a conference call Monday that the network is bringing back action series 24, with Kiefer Sutherland reprising his role as CTU agent Jack Bauer.

24: Live Another Day, which will likely premiere in May 2014 and run through the summer, according to Reilly, is being promoted as an event series and will consist of 12 episodes rather than the traditional 24.

“It will go in chronological order of the day, but it’ll skip hours,” Reilly told reporters.

When asked whether the new version could eventually morph into a full-fledged series, Reilly demurred. “It could be an annual event,” he said. “There could be sequels. I don’t know that they would be yearly.”

Since 24 went off the air in May 2010, showrunner Howard Gordon (Homeland) has been mulling a movie based on the series, which never got off the ground. “As they got into the feature film, I think they all agreed 24 being compressed into two hours is not 24,” Reilly said.

Google Drive triples free storage to 15GB

By Seth Rosenblatt

Google’s capacity to store your files will jump by a factor of three, the company said Monday, rising from 5GB to 15GB shared across Google+, Drive, and Gmail.

Google made the announcement just before Google I/O developers conference begins this week. The changes will “roll out over the next couple of weeks,” Google said in a blog post.

The new amount of storage space will give people who use Google services the most generous storage capacity of any player in the free online-storage game. A quick look at competitors shows that Dropbox currently starts free subscribers at 2GB, Microsoft SkyDrive users get 7GB, and Apple iCloud, Amazon Cloud Storage, and SugarSync offer 5GB for free. The announcement follows a Google Drive update from last week that allows you to save files from the Web directly to Drive.

Marijuana Linked To Lower Bladder Cancer Risk, Study Says

By Kathleen Myers

People who smoke marijuana may be less likely to get bladder cancer than those who smoke cigarettes, a new study says.

Kaiser Permanente researchers compared the risk of bladder cancer in more than 83,000 men who smoked cigarettes only, marijuana only or both substances, USA Today reports. The men were aged 45 to 69, and they were examined over 11 years.

“Cannabis use only was associated with a 45 percent reduction in bladder cancer incidence, and tobacco use only was associated with a 52 percent increase in bladder cancer,” study author Dr. Anil A. Thomas, a fellow in urology at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Los Angeles, told USA Today.

More frequent marijuana use — smoking cannabis more than 500 times — was associated with greater risk reduction than smoking only once or twice. However, the study was critized for not including any non-smokers.

Thomas said the link does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship. However, he explained, “the theory is that there are receptors in the bladder that are affected by cannabis.”

Kaiser Permanente’s research comes on the heels of a September finding by a pair of scientists at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco that a compound derived from marijuana could stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer, including cancer in the breast, brain and prostate.

King James Bible: Writing all 788,000 words by hand

bibleFor four centuries English-speaking people have learned about Christianity by reading the King James Bible.

The English translation introduced phrases still well-used today such as ‘no peace for the wicked’ (Isaiah 57:21), ‘the blind leading the blind’ (Matthew 15:13) and ‘God forbid’ (Romans 13:1).

One retiree from New York state in the US has spent four years writing the entire Bible – all 788,000 words – out by hand on 2,400 pages of watercolour paper.

Phillip Patterson, 63, finished the final verses this weekend before reading from his finished manuscript at his church in the village of Philmont.

Mr Patterson explained to the BBC’s Matt Danzico why he undertook the monkish pursuit, despite saying he does not consider himself particularly religious.

Soledad O’Brien Calls Out ‘White People’ Over ‘Black In America’ Series

Soledad O'Brien takes a moment to talk with Ca...

Soledad O’Brien addressed criticism from “white people” about her documentaries about race in America in a new video.

O’Brien has hosted five documentaries in CNN’s “Black In America” series. In a talk at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, she said that some people have told her that the documentaries are “divisive,” and that they think black Americans should stop differentiating themselves from white Americans.

“First of all, it’s only white people who ever said that — ‘if we could just see beyond race. If only people didn’t see race, it would be such a better place, and you are responsible for bringing up these icky race issues, Soledad, you should just let sleeping dogs lie,'” O’Brien said.

She continued, “I was like, again, ‘OK, white person, this is a conversation you clearly are uncomfortable with, and I have no problem seeing race, and I think we should talk about race.”

Now They Want to Take Away the 8-Hour Day and 40-Hour Week

By Dave Johnson

Republicans are trying to pass an “alternative” to overtime pay. This is really about taking away the eight-hour workday and 40-hour workweek. Will weekends be next? What about an “alternative” to paying workers at all?

House Republicans are pushing a bill that takes away extra pay for overtime, substituting “comp” time instead. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938 is the law that brought us the eight-hour workday and the 40-hour workweek. This law does not prohibit employers from requiring workers to work over 40 hours. Instead, it gives employers an incentive to instead pay extra or hire more people, and gives employees a premium if they do have to work longer. (Note that this is also the law that brought us a minimum wage and outlawed child labor.)

There is proof that overtime pay works: workers like domestic workers and agricultural workers – jobs not covered by the FLSA – are twice as likely to have to work more than 40 hours in a week. And even with this law, Americans already work more hours than in almost any other industrialized country.

The 182 Percent Loan: How Installment Lenders Put Borrowers in a World of Hurt

A shop window advertising payday loans.

By Paul Kiel

One day late last year, Katrina Sutton stood at a gas pump outside Atlanta and swiped her debit card. Insufficient funds. But that couldn’t be. She’d been careful to wait until her $270 paycheck from Walmart had hit her account. The money wasn’t there? It was all she had. And without gas, she couldn’t get to work.

She tried not to panic, but after she called her card company, she couldn’t help it. Her funds had been frozen, she was told, by World Finance.

Sutton lives in Georgia, a state that has banned payday loans. But World Finance, a billion-dollar company, peddles installment loans, a product that often drives borrowers into a similar quagmire of debt.

World is one of America’s largest providers of installment loans, an industry that thrives in at least 19 states, mostly in the South and Midwest; claims more than 10 million customers; and has survived recent efforts by lawmakers to curtail lending that carries exorbitant interest rates and fees. Installment lenders were not included in a 2006 federal law that banned selling some classes of loans with an annual percentage rate above 36 percent to service members — so the companies often set up shop near the gates of military bases, offering loans with annual rates that can soar into the triple digits.
