Hackers stole $45 million in ATM card breach

Nice ATM

They didn’t use guns, masks or even threatening notes passed to bank tellers. But an alleged international gang of cyberthieves managed to steal $45 million from thousands of ATMs in carefully coordinated attacks conducted in a matter of hours, federal authorities charged Thursday.

A four-count indictment unsealed in Brooklyn charged that eight members of the alleged gang’s New York City crew alone stole approximately $2.4 million from nearly 3,000 ATMs across the metropolitan area in secret strikes carried out on two days in February.

“In the place of guns and masks, this cybercrime organization used laptops and the Internet,” said Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch as federal authorities announced details of one of the largest 21st century versions of cyber-robbery yet uncovered. “Moving as swiftly as data over the Internet, the organization worked its way from the computer systems of international corporations to the streets of New York City, with the defendants fanning out across Manhattan to steal millions of dollars from hundreds of ATMS.”

My Medical Choice By Angelina Jolie

English: Angelina Jolie at the Cannes film fes...

MY MOTHER fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was.

We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.

Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.

On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work.

Seth Meyers will succeed Jimmy Fallon on ‘Late Night’ when Fallon succeeds Jay Leno

Seth Meyers

By Don Kaplan and Stephen Rex Brown

Seth Meyers will take over “Late Night” in 2014.

The “Saturday Night Live” head writer and host of the “Weekend Update” segment will be the fourth host of the 12:30 a.m. show on NBC when he succeeds Jimmy Fallon, who is getting promoted to the “Tonight Show.”

“Every discussion led to Seth,” said an NBC source. “He’s brilliant, got the talent, the chops and Lorne (Michaels) loves him.”

Meyers, 39, will hit the airwaves in February next year — around the same time NBC begins coverage of the Winter Olympics. Around the same time, Fallon, 38, will be filling the big seat of Jay Leno.

‘Sesame Street’ to add a third Spanish-speaking character to its cast

Sesame Street

Children’s television series “Sesame Street” said on Friday it was adding a third Spanish-speaking character to its cast and will put a special focus on Hispanic heritage in its upcoming season, in an acknowledgement of changing U.S. demographics.

Bilingual character Armando, who will be portrayed by 26-year-old Puerto Rico-born actor Ismael Cruz Cordova, will debut in September on the long-running series of people and puppets that airs on public broadcaster PBS.

“Like his character ‘Mando,’ Ismael represents a culturally fluid and deeply layered new generation of Hispanic-Americans,” Carol-Lynn Parente, executive producer of “Sesame Street,” said in a statement.

“He has a passion for creative expression and a warmth that comes right through the camera,” Parente added.

Kiefer Sutherland mulling return to ‘24’ after cancellation of ‘Touch’: reports

English: Actor Kiefer Sutherland at TV series ...

Kiefer Sutherland may have lost his “Touch,” but several intriguing reports suggest he might now be headed for a resurrected “24.”

Sutherland played beleaguered federal agent Jack Bauer for eight seasons on Fox’s “24,” an action drama that won Emmys for both the show and Sutherland’s lead performance.

“24” ended in 2010 and in 2012 Sutherland took the lead in another Fox show, “Touch,” playing a father attempting to communicate with a young mute son who has almost supernatural powers of perception.

The show, which had both mystical and police procedural elements, never really caught on, and most TV viewers assumed it was only because of Sutherland’s name that Fox brought it back this year for a second season.

The network placed it in a low-viewership Friday slot, however, and it averaged less than 4 million viewers an episode.
