Esperanza Spalding – I Can’t Help It

From Esperanza’ newest disk, “Radio” this video is daring and relevant in its subject matter. You can’t hide who you are and live a lie. Likewise, we really don’t control whom we fall in love with. I applaud this video!

Tattoos No Longer A Kiss Of Death In The Workplace

Fitness and Tattoos

by Rachel Hennessey

“Now you’re never going to get a job!” Almost everyone in the 14% pool of tattooed Americans has heard something like this from a relative or friend. But as the number of inked Americans grows, is the traditional assumption that tattoos and jobs don’t mix really true in 2013?

Workplace tattoo policies vary among and within industries. But with many contemporary companies stressing commitments to diversity and inclusion, tattoos are becoming increasingly unproblematic across the board. Lax tattoo policies for blue-collar and art-related jobs aren’t shocking, but the increasingly tolerant outlook of frontrunners in corporate, educational and medical industries are more surprising.

As consulting firm CEO John Challenger explained, most employers today would agree that a person’s appearance is nowhere near as important as his or her professional skills. “Even in this tight job market, most companies aren’t going to view tattoos too harshly. Companies have a vested interest in hiring the most qualified candidate.”

Wash. Judge Tells Cops To Return Man’s Marijuana Or Be Found In Contempt

English: Close up shot of some high quality ma...

By Associated Press

Police in Tacoma could soon be in real trouble over pot.The department could be found in contempt if they continue to refuse to return a small amount of marijuana seized from a man after a traffic stop. Municipal Court Judge Jack Emery repeated an order to police Thursday to return the drug to Joseph L. Robertson within seven days or they could be found in contempt.“Appeal or comply,” Emery told assistant city attorney John Walker. “Or next week, show up, and I would advise you to bring counsel.” The judge first ordered police to return the drug on Feb. 28, but they have refused, The News Tribune reported Friday. It was seized in May of last year when an officer pulled over the Tacoma man for speeding. He was cited for driving without a license and misdemeanor marijuana possession. Prosecutors dismissed the drug charge in December, after state voters decided to legalize small amounts of the drug.Robertson then asked for his pot back, and provided proof of medical marijuana authorization. The city refused, which led to Emery’s Feb. 28 order. If the matter is not settled by the May 2 hearing, it could go to higher courts. The pot is now in the possession of the Pierce County sheriff’s department, which operates the property room for seized evidence. Deputies won’t give it to Robertson. “It’s Tacoma’s case,” said sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer. “If they want it, they can come and get it.”Although the judge said he thinks “there’s contemptuous behavior here,” Emery added that the case was “a quagmire,” due to the conflicting provisions of state and federal law.

Do Psychopaths Get Promoted Faster?

By Drake Baer

psychopathIt’s as catchy as a pop song: Your boss is an axe-wielding psychopath, a Pat or Pattie Bateman just waiting for the right time to strike.

The argument crops up in business tomes from time to time (even in this publication); we’ve even furnished you with a handy quiz for your armchair psychiatry.

But is the research ready?

While a new meta-analysis has concluded that “business psychopathy” is a “budding field,” being cautious with our conclusions might serve us well–although it makes for less exciting headlines. As the British Psychological Society’s Occupational Digest Blog argued last week, the research needs to mature. The widely cited finding that 3% of managers are psychopaths versus 1% of the general population comes from a single study.
