How to Get a Black Woman Fired

Adria Loves Seward Co-op

By Channing Kennedy

The Internet has had lots of opinions about Adria Richards, the black technologist who was fired for tweeting a photo of two white male colleagues she overheard making lewd jokes during a conference co-sponsored by her employer. In the tweet, Richards asked PyCon conference organizers to come speak to the men, who were sitting behind her. And although organizers resolved the issue amicably by all accounts, once news of Richards’ tweet broke, the usual mob of faceless Twitter trolls made racist, misogynist threats against her. Then they crashed her employer SendGrid’s website with a DDoS attack.

The same mob, plus a lot of new joiners using their real names, also blamed Richards when one of the two men was fired by his employer, PlayHaven. (Interestingly, PlayHaven has yet to be the target of a coordinated web attack.) And the mob cheered when Richards herself was publicly terminated, seemingly in response. In the words of her former boss, SendGrid CEO Jim Franklin, “[H]er actions have strongly divided the same community she was supposed to unite. … [T]he consequences that resulted from how she reported the conduct put our business in danger.”

4 Job-Search Tips That People Normally Pay Big Bucks To Learn

By Dan Fastenberg

ueThe idea of paying someone to help you get a job may strike you as absurd. Yet the practice of using a job coach is growing as workers seek any advantage in a tight labor market. But what would a career coach tell you, if you had the bucks to hire one?

Interviews with career coaches uncovered several key job-search tips. Some of them are quite simple — but often go overlooked. As Miriam Salpeter, a coach and AOL Jobs blogger, notes: “It’s not rocket science.”

1. Don’t just send in an application and think your work is done. In a bruising hiring environment, applying online can often feel like a black hole. And that’s because it often is. The tendency of job seekers to simply send a resume, and do nothing else is “terrible,” according to Michael Melcher, the founder of the New York-based leadership development and executive coaching firm, Next Step Partners. (Melcher is pictured on the right, while teaching a leadership development workshop in Haiti.) Which brings us to the second tip.

2. Figure out who you know on the inside. Check out your social networks, like LinkedIn, and see if you know anyone who knows anyone who knows anyone at the company. And don’t dismiss third-hand referrals either.

How corrupt is New York? Very

By Greg David

The Empire State building from 33rd St & 6th AvNew York is more corrupt than other states, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said Tuesday, in announcing the arrest of state Sen. Malcolm Smith and others in the latest bribery scandal to rock the Empire State. He didn’t say how he knew that, so I decided to find out if it’s true. He’s correct, with some caveats. The more important question is why, which I’ll tackle in Monday’s print column.Over the long term, the New York City area is No. 1 for corruption. Dick Simpson, a politician-turned-political-scientist in Chicago, analyzed reports from the U.S. Justice Department detailing public corruption convictions from 1976 to 2010 by judicial district. The Chicago area ranked No. 1, followed by Los Angeles and then the Southern District of New York. However, that excludes Brooklyn and Queens and Long Island, which are in the Eastern District. If these two are combined (and that is a better way to compare downstate to Chicago or Los Angeles), then our area is No. 1 by a big margin.

Convictions between 1976 and 2010

The story is a little better when the results are adjusted for population.

Wiz Khalifa (ft. Akon) – Let It Go

I have a really strong affinity for videos that tells a story. This one does adding Akon is a bonus. If you have visited this site before you know I placed Wiz Khalifa’s O.N.I.F.C as one of the best hip-hop albums of 2012.

Sevyn Streeter – I Like It

When I first heard this song I actually thought it sounded a lot like early Beyoncé. That is definitely a compliment. The video for “I Like It” is good not great. It seems a little rushed and déjà vu. We have seen this video before by many other artists, done much better. Nonetheless I am a fan of Sevyn and can’t wait to listen to an album soon.

The fundamental role of women in the Church

1_0_679206For the third time this week Pope Francis returned to the topic of women in the Church in his general audience catechesis. On Holy Saturday he had dedicated his Easter Vigil Homily to the women as the first witnesses to the novelty of the Resurrection. On Tuesday morning he had spoken of the tears of the Magdalene and how we should follow her example of faith in our life’s journey. On Wednesday he expanded his reflections to the women of the world, whom he said have a special and fundamental role in the Church and the transmission of the faith . Departing from his scripted text, as is now his very own tradition, he appealed: “Mothers go forward with this witness to the Risen Christ!”. Emer McCarthy reports Listen: Looking out over the tens of thousands present, Pope Francis returned to the catechesis on teh Year of Fith and in particular the Creed. He spoke of how the in the professions of faith of the New Testament, only men are remembered as witnesses of the Resurrection, the Apostles, but not the women. “This is because, according to the Jewish Law of the time, women and children were not considered reliable, credible witnesses. In the Gospels, however, women have a primary, fundamental role.

The Purge

MV5BMTQ4NTYwMzA5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTUwODMzOQ@@__V1_SX214_This looks like an extremely good premise for a movie. America has become a virtual utopia except for one 12 hour period every year where anything and everything becomes legal. The trailer reminds me of a little bit of 2002’s “Panic Room.” The Purge opens on May 31, 2013 and stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headley, and Edwin Hodge.
