Random Thoughts

thoughtsIt has been 47 weeks since my Facebook and Twitter avatars have changed to a picture of Trayvon Martin. The wheels of justice truly grind slowly. Let’s not let the tragedy fade into the darkness of the night, let’s continue to shine a bright light until justice is served and laws change.

OMG!! There’s a chicken wing shortage?! What will Hooters, Wingstop, and Buffalo Wild Wings do?

February 2, 2013 is a destination television night. Lifetime premieres, “Betty & Coretta” starring Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett as civil rights legends Dr. Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is an example of an attention whoring, out of touch, simple minded, bigot for suggesting that President Obama resign because Beyoncé may have lip-synced the national anthem. Paul’s statement: “By lip synching the national anthem, Beyoncé has cast a dark cloud over the President’s second term….The only way President Obama can remove that cloud is by resigning from office at once.” Please join me in shouting to the Senator to, “S#$% THE F#$% UP!!”

WTH? Gasoline prices are on the rise. Doesn’t anyone realize the higher the price of gas the less money we have. The less money we have the less we buy. The less we buy the less profit businesses earn. The less business earn the less people they staff and hire. The worse our economy becomes. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this ish out.

I knew Subway was suspect on their foot long sandwiches. Damn, I should’ve thought of measuring one. Can the lawsuit against them be a class-action? I believe missing a half to a full inch deserves a refund.

Congratulations to Sloane Stephens and Serena Williams; the future and present of American women’s tennis.

Congratulations also to Isabel dos Santos, Africa’s first female BILLIONAIRE!!! You are an example to everyone in the diaspora.

Have you ever had a moment when you see or hear from a particular person and it’s like a jolt of electricity going thru your body and your mood instantly improves? They could recite the dictionary and you wouldn’t care. It’s the fact that they are there and present in the moment with you. Treasure that. Cherish that. Appreciate that and the person who gets you that way.

Google Fiber is anticipating nation-wide “fiber to the premises” service by 2015. I can’t wait until I can have 1 Gbps in my “fiber-hood” in Kansas City. You should be excited too! Google is changing the paradigm for internet and cable television providers. Customers will now have a true choice.

So will Captain Kirk and Spock be visiting Tatooine? Will they be shaking hands or mind-melding with Darth Vader? I like J.J. Abrams and his brilliance but, I’m not sure him helming two of the holy grails in science fiction is the right thing.

Jim Buss is learning not to place pride or any personal feelings ahead of making money and winning. Hiring Mike D’Antoni was a mistake. A boss needs to understand the skills of his workers to hire the best person to bring out the best in their workers. The Lakers based on the current roster was best suited to the triangle not run and gun, especially with the two bigs- Howard and Gasol. Whatever the personal issues or poor consultants that clouded his decision making, Buss should have done whatever it took to hire Phil Jackson. Sorry Laker fans, you have been robbed and hood-winked!

Hopefully Twinkies, Ho-Ho’s, Ding Dongs, Suzy Q’s, etc. will return to supermarket shelves soon. My stash is almost depleted! According to the Washington Post, 11 companies have bids to acquire the brands. I can’t wait!

Miss Bumbum 2012 (that’s right, I don’t make this stuff up), Carine Felizardo strolled thru Times Square showing her bum in a bikini yesterday. She must’ve frozen that bum bum off! It was freezing in NYC. It would’ve been nice to see her though. It’s possibly the most risqué Times Square has been in a decade!

Till the next time, love yourself and each other….Peace!!

New Musical Thoughts – January

noteJanuary is a slow month for new release music. There are however a few notable releases this month. All of them are available on iTunes and Amazon. Here are my thoughts on a few of them.

Dawn RichardGoldenheart: Formerly of Danity Kane and Dirty Money, here’s Dawn’s much-anticipated second solo album. A funky fusion of pop, dance, and r&b Goldenheart is a solid effort. Her uptempo songs will definitely land in  DJ’s rotations in many venues across the globe. Her voice is hypnotic and her arrangements are tightly woven with her vocal range without being intrusive or distracting. It has a been there done that feel though. Goldenheart is a good album, but unspectacular.

Teena MarieBeautiful: Taken way too soon from all of us, here is the album Teena was working on when she suddenly died in 2010. Here is some REAL R&B!!! Let’s face it, in many respects r&b has been hijacked by rap and the auto-tune. This is the real joint! You can listen to this anywhere, anyplace, with anyone. It has infectious grooves, smart lyrics, and the smooth like velvet vocals of our beloved Teena while also introducing us to her daughter Alia Rose. Alia Rose’s future is bright. It was her who made sure Beautiful was completed and gifted to all of us. The song, Love Starved is a time machine, taking me back to Teena’s Deja Vu days. Lady T left us a diamond of a gift with this album. We all know how precious, beautiful and rare a diamond is.

Destiny’s Child – Love Songs: This is like that decadent dessert that you don’t have often but love so much. Love Songs is a compilation. Nothing we haven’t heard before except for their new song, Nuclear. That by itself warrants a listen. This album explains why Simon Cowell signed his X-Factor protegé’s Fifth Harmony to a deal-to fill a need. In Destiny’s Child absence there has not been one hugely successful female group to break out. The music scene is missing that. Destiny’s Child with this disc fills the hole they created and signals that they are one of the best groups of all-time.

2 Cellos – In2ition: Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser returns with their sophomore effort introducing us to their classical/pop fusion interpreted on cello. It’s an eclectic selection from Rihanna’s We Found Love to AC/DC’s Highway to Hell this is a thoroughly enjoyable album. Two thumbs up!

The Tenors – Lead With Your Heart: Formerly known as the Canadian Tenors, Lead with your Heart is their second album. Its been two years since their début disc but it really didn’t feel that way based on their touring schedule and television appearances. On this disc you definitely experience a maturation vocally of the group. The arrangements and vocals are lush, rich, and powerful. The selection of material runs the gamut from Elton John to Bob Dylan to the beloved hymn, Amazing Grace. You don’t have to be a classical music or vocal fan to appreciate this disc.

Various Artists – 12-12-12 The Concert for Sandy Relief: It’s not the whole show but some of the many memorable performances of the night.

A$AP Rocky – Long Live A$AP: This is hard! This is forceful! This is an ass whooping of rhymes. It’s not for the faint of heart. His flow is impeccable. This dude has SWAG!

Some notable singles has been released and I am looking forward to hearing more new music from these artists soon:

Prince – Screwdriver

Justin Timberlake – Suit & Tie (with Jay-Z)

Kelly Rowland – Kisses Down Low

Big Boi – In The A (featuring T.I. & Ludacris)

You may not know Big Boi released his newest album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors right before Christmas (December 11, 2012). The beat is hard, with great cameos by T.I. and Ludacris. The video however, is unimpressive. I hope it was a cold day because that fur/faux fur coat must have been hot if it wasn’t cold in Atlanta on the day of the shoot.

Richard Blanco – One Today

Richard Blanco reads his poem at the 57th Pres...

It was a stirring piece on inauguration day Monday. It is even more powerful now after a few days have passed. I believe this poem will have a relevance day, months, and years from now. One Today, captures the totality of America. It captures the thread of commonality that runs thru each of us stitching and binding us together into the quilted tapestry of the family of America.

One Today

One sun rose on us today, kindled over our shores,

peeking over the Smokies, greeting the faces

of the Great Lakes, spreading a simple truth

across the Great Plains, then charging across the Rockies.

One light, waking up rooftops, under each one, a story

told by our silent gestures moving behind windows.

My face, your face, millions of faces in morning’s mirrors,

each one yawning to life, crescendoing into our day:

pencil-yellow school buses, the rhythm of traffic lights,

fruit stands: apples, limes, and oranges arrayed like rainbows

begging our praise. Silver trucks heavy with oil or paper—

bricks or milk, teeming over highways alongside us,

on our way to clean tables, read ledgers, or save lives—

to teach geometry, or ring-up groceries as my mother did

for twenty years, so I could write this poem.

All of us as vital as the one light we move through,

the same light on blackboards with lessons for the day:

equations to solve, history to question, or atoms imagined,

the “I have a dream” we keep dreaming,

or the impossible vocabulary of sorrow that won’t explain

the empty desks of twenty children marked absent

today, and forever. Many prayers, but one light

breathing color into stained glass windows,

life into the faces of bronze statues, warmth

onto the steps of our museums and park benches

as mothers watch children slide into the day.

One ground. Our ground, rooting us to every stalk

of corn, every head of wheat sown by sweat

and hands, hands gleaning coal or planting windmills

in deserts and hilltops that keep us warm, hands

digging trenches, routing pipes and cables, hands

as worn as my father’s cutting sugarcane

so my brother and I could have books and shoes.

The dust of farms and deserts, cities and plains

mingled by one wind—our breath. Breathe. Hear it

through the day’s gorgeous din of honking cabs,

buses launching down avenues, the symphony

of footsteps, guitars, and screeching subways,

the unexpected song bird on your clothes line.

Hear: squeaky playground swings, trains whistling,

or whispers across café tables, Hear: the doors we open

for each other all day, saying: hello, shalom,

buon giorno, howdy, namaste, or buenos días

in the language my mother taught me—in every language

spoken into one wind carrying our lives

without prejudice, as these words break from my lips.

One sky: since the Appalachians and Sierras claimed

their majesty, and the Mississippi and Colorado worked

their way to the sea. Thank the work of our hands:

weaving steel into bridges, finishing one more report

for the boss on time, stitching another wound

or uniform, the first brush stroke on a portrait,

or the last floor on the Freedom Tower

jutting into a sky that yields to our resilience.

One sky, toward which we sometimes lift our eyes

tired from work: some days guessing at the weather

of our lives, some days giving thanks for a love

that loves you back, sometimes praising a mother

who knew how to give, or forgiving a father

who couldn’t give what you wanted.

We head home: through the gloss of rain or weight

of snow, or the plum blush of dusk, but always—home,

always under one sky, our sky. And always one moon

like a silent drum tapping on every rooftop

and every window, of one country—all of us—

facing the stars

hope—a new constellation

waiting for us to map it,

waiting for us to name it—together

Oblivion

Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman star in this film about a post-apocalyptic Earth after a war with an alien race. I think we should all be looking forward to this especially after the disappointing Jack Reacher. Oblivion opens on April 19, 2013.
