As opposed to my Rhythm & Blues post, the best rap/hip-hop albums of 2012 was a much easier list for me to compile. Did you know that in 2012 according to Nielson and Soundscan digital album sales of rap music was up 14.7%? My hope is that the music and lyrics matures and move away from the decidedly offensive. But then again what is considered by some as offensive can be considered acceptable and commonplace by others. All of them are available on iTunes and Amazon. As I post my various lists some artists and/or the song to sample may be well-known while others may not be. Post your favorite rap albums or songs in comments. Enjoy! Without further adieu, my top five rap albums of 2012.
Ultimately, those were my slam dunks. My runner ups were:
Slaughterhouse – Welcome To Our House
Kanye West – G.O.O.D. Music: Cruel Summer
Wiz Khalifa – O.N.I.F.C.
Frank Ocean – Channel Orange
Kendrick Lamar – Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City
The Weeknd – Trilogy- I know, I know. The Weeknd is R&B. However this is too damn HOT of a album to completely ignore. Trilogy, like Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head came out at the end of 2012. This dude definitely has a bright future! Trilogy gives up neo-soul and to some degree neo-rap for the new millennium. Triology is actually a compilation of three previously released mixtapes. Each of the three discs has a different vibe, its like three separate personalities. Triology takes you on a smoky sullen journey of love and love lost. The Weeknd is a great lyricist. He is relatable. You feel and know exactly where he is coming from with each song. He even does a cover/reinterpretation of Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana. This is a gem of 2012!
Ran across this vid explaining the U.S. Debt Limit. It’s good introductory information to the serious debate about to occur in Washington D.C. this is a short, good watch.
50 Cent is back with “My Life” a nice hip-hop/rock track with some help from Adam Levine (Maroon 5) and Slim Shady. Did you know 50 has a fitness book? You can find “Formula 50: A 6-Week Workout and Nutrition Plan That Will Transform Your Life” at your local bookstore. “My Life” is from his forthcoming album, Street King Immortal.

ohnny Depp has to be one of the best character actors of his generation. His ability to become diverse characters is uncanny. Remember Edward Scissorhands? He didn’t utter one word throughout the entire movie. His entire performance was communicated via physical expressions. See him as Tonto in Gore Verbinski’s (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest) reimagined Lone Ranger, opening for the 4th of July weekend.
The newest reboot of a superhero franchise opening on June 14, 2013. Directed by Zack Snyder (300), Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Immortals & The Tudors) as Superman, Amy Adams (Trouble with the Curve) as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe (Les Miserables) as Superman’s daddy Jor-El, Diane Lane (Secretariat) as Martha Kent, and legendary Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves) as Jonathan Kent. Looks like a potential summer blockbuster and better than the forgettable Superman Returns. Remember that? I thought so.
2 Chainz (government name-Tauheed Epps) whose début cd Based on a T.R.U. Story has been nominated Best Rap Album in next month’s Grammy Award. Its well-deserved. This is one of my best rap albums of 2012.
2012 is a not so distant memory. At this early time of the year, we are anticipating the upcoming new releases in music to come. For me, its time to review the previous year and figure out what were my best releases of the year. Today, I will tackle the best R&B releases of the year. All of them are available on iTunes and Amazon. As I post my various lists some artists and/or the song to sample may be well-known while others may not be. Post your favorite R&B albums or songs in comments. Enjoy!
My top five R&B albums of 2012:
Elle Varner – Perfectly Imperfect – A perfectly creative début. Her voice has a freshness and lusciousness that is addictive.
Melanie Fiona – The MF Life – You feel her raw emotions in each song on this disk. Those emotions are universal and have been experienced by everyone. The MF Life is therapeutic for the soul.
Brandy – Two Eleven – Adult. Mature. Sexy. Fierce. All come to mind when listening to this album. Brandy returned to the scene with exceptional ferocity. She definitely put the youngsters on notice that she’s back making music watch out! This album made me do a double take because it was so whole and consistent. Every song blended with each other to build a musical tapestry that newer artists should pay attention to.
Alicia Keys – Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys can do no wrong! She has never disappointed and on this her studio album her exceptional musicianship is on display. This disk is pure musical caviar. In this disk we experience her continued growth as a person and I look forward to continued growth along with her. On a future disc I would thoroughly enjoy if she would compose a piano concerto. We have heard tidbits of other famous classical piano pieces in each of her earlier disks, but it would be a treat to hear an original composition. I believe true fans would love it!
Miguel – Kaleidoscope Dream
This was tough to narrow this list down. For me, there were some really good contenders this year. I must give big props to the following artists who had fantastic albums but did not make my top five….
Lianne La Havas – Is Your Love Big Enough?
Tank – This is How I Feel
Leela James – Loving You More, In The Spirit Of Etta James
Me’Shell NdegeOcello – Pour Une Ame Souveraine (For a sovereign soul) – A Dedication To Nina Simone
Estelle – All Of Me
