R&B singer Mario arrested for assault

Shocking! Disappointed! Assault? What times are we living in? Where is the respect? Maybe, it’s me but putting my hands on my mother would have been dishonorable, disrespectful, and I would have definitely met with an untimely or timely (depending on point of view) death.

Gwendolyn Brooks- Speech to the Young: Speech to the Progress-Toward

Other than school, my primary influence in the realm of African-American literature was my mother. A passion I enjoy to this day. Today, I would like to share a favorite from Gwendolyn Brooks. This poem has a message that all of us need to understand and embrace every day.

Speech to the Young: Speech to Progress-Toward

Say to them,
say to the down-keepers,
the sun-slappers,
the self-soilers,
the harmony-hushers,
“even if you are not ready for day
it cannot always be night.”
You will be right.
For that is the hard home-run.

Live not for battles won.
Live not for the-end-of-the-song.
Live in the along.

Dancing Flight Attendants

This is the safety demonstration from Cebu Airlines, a low-cost Philippine airline. If American airlines did this I may actually pay attention. They had better choreography than some shows I have seen. LOL!

Hampton Inn accused of paying blacks less

Hampton Inn in Eagle Pass, TX IMG 1914

Can you say L-A-W-S-U-I-T? I smell a nice, big out of court settlement on the horizon for the black and hispanic workers at the hotel. This is a black eye (literally) for a hotel brand I frequented when I used travel on business often. I am sure Hilton Worldwide will try to steer clear of this as much as possible.

I’m glad that international labor unions have the same view of Wal-Mart that Americans have. Wal-Mart needs to adapt and realize that worker and human rights are above corporate profits.

I completely understand his statements. He is a businessman and he is thinking about HIS business. It is fair to point out that fact that his beliefs are categorically opposite of the crown jewel in his media empire, Fox News.

10 ways education reform can begin at home

These ten items that Michelle Bernard writes about are not new. When you think about it, the ten points are exactly what our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents did when they raised my contemporaries, our parents, and their parents. It boils down to community, being active in the community, and being active and present in your child’s life.

What Will Future Generations Condemn Us For?

Kwame Anthony Appiah wrote a compelling article for last Sunday’s edition of the Washington Post. The four chosen would all be considered tyrannical, unjust, unhealthy, and irresponsible by future generations. We have the power to change each of these four items for the better. The road to change these practices are not easy and there are important issues about their revision that must be addressed but, it can be done. We have the power to change the paradigm, we begin with changing ourselves.

Drug Legalization — a Windfall for State Budgets

This is an interesting topic, will California voters take a morality stance or will they vote legalization? Will this tear at the moral fabric or will adult maturity prevail? The monetary argument for the state is obvious. The outcome of the vote on Proposition 19 is one to watch.
