From Melanie’s hit album, MF Life.
Arriving June 7, 2013 is Tiger Eyes based on the book by the noted adolescent angst writer Judy Blume. Who reading this has never read a book written by her? I better hear crickets! Tiger Eyes’ screenplay was written by Mrs. Blume’s son, Lawrence who also directed the film. Tiger Eyes is about a teen’s journey to find the will to live on and conquer her fears after the murder of her father. Tiger Eyes stars Willa Holland, Amy Jo Johnson, Cynthia Stevenson and Tatanka Means.
Tupac Shakur was a voice of my generation. He gave a voice to our angst and displeasure at what was going on around us. He gave a voice to what black men had to do in some cases to survive. He gave a voice to what we do in the dark when we are alone and in despair and feel like the world is collapsing around us. This June, Tupac would’ve been 42 years old. I wonder what he would’ve had to say about Katrina, 9/11, the mass incarceration of black men, President Obama’s election and re-election, and the state of hip-hop today.
Sometimes when I’m alone
I Cry,
Cause I am on my own.
The tears I cry are bitter and warm.
They flow with life but take no form
I Cry because my heart is torn.
I find it difficult to carry on.
If I had an ear to confide in,
I would cry among my treasured friend,
but who do you know that stops that long,
to help another carry on.
The world moves fast and it would rather pass by.
Then to stop and see what makes one cry,
so painful and sad.
And sometimes…
I Cry
and no one cares about why.
This was video taken on the A or D train between 125th St and 59th Street. It’s hilarious as hell! This is a common occurrence on a subway ride in NYC. Sometimes you may get lucky and someone who is real gifted and talented performs. I wonder which hip-hop song he’s listening to?

Ladies and gentlemen, Ms. Hill has spoken her part.
Following a day full of headlines that stated Lauryn Hill was escaping jail time by signing a $1 Million record deal with Sony Records, Lauryn Hill fought fire with fire by taking to her own blog to set records straight about what exactly is going on in her pockets and in her personal life.
In her ever-so-eloquent manner with words, Lauryn wrote on her mslaurynhill Tumblr page:
“It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music.
I’ve remained silent, after an extensive healing process. This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings.
It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic’ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so….”
The blog comes after the former Fugees member pled guilty to tax evasion for the years between 2005 and 2007. Lauryn Hill has since worked out a deal with the judge, and surprisingly, a new deal with record label Sony.
Lauryn’s presiding judge scolded the “When It Hurts So Bad” singer for making “no effort” to pay her taxes back, but showed some leniency by postponing her sentencing until May 6.
