The Meaning of Mandela

As President Obama visits South Africa, Nelson Mandela lies dying. I—like millions of Americans who grew up thousands of miles away from the massacre at Sharpeville and the rally at Durban, and decades away from the trials at Pretoria and Rivonia—am grappling with what this means.

We know Mandela as the man in recent photos, the weathered and beautiful man with that bright young smile, surrounded by children and grandchildren.

We know that some of our parents and grandparents celebrated when he was released from prison, from a far away penitentiary called Robben Island, which has a receding place in the American mind. I vaguely remember as a child watching a large crowd hear Mandela speak, and then watching him march. I recall the raised fist, the turned head, the woman at his side.

I knew from trips to South Africa that he is more than a political leader there, more than a cultural icon, but a father, a guardian, a venerated friend. I heard it in the reverential way they said his name, Madiba. I saw it in eyes that watered when they spoke of him, their knowing smiles.

I know that certain debts are owed to Mandela. By Malan, and the National Party, and Verwoerd, and Botha, and all the people who locked him up for nearly 30 years. By the guards who would not let him attend the funerals of his mother or his son. By those in other governments who took far too long to stand by his side. By too many of his fellow Christians the world over who could not extend their prayers far enough to reach his cell, and petition God and South Africa for his release.

Breathe Deeply

meditation

By Michelle Robin, D.C.

Breath is looked upon as life, as spirit, throughout world cultures. Breath has both physiological and emotional connections. Breathing is both reactionary and proactive. Your breathing will respond to your physical or emotional circumstances; you can also control your breathing to affect your physical and emotional responses. Breath is energizing, cleansing, and restorative—physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. Before I discuss how interwoven breath is into the well-being of your mind-body-spirit, take a moment to assess your awareness of your own well-being and the quality of your breathing. …

The power of conscious breathing is inherent in the body’s design. All you have to do is reawaken your dormant intelligence, your dormant understanding of conscious breathing, and through practice you can begin breathing at your own most efficient rate. It doesn’t matter if you have breathed poorly for years. Once you start to breathe deeply and well, your entire system is reactivated according to original design and immediately begins to bring you benefits.

It’s easy to see this process at work when you are under stress. The muscles of respiration tend to be the first to respond to negative emotions; there is always a response of tension that occurs at the edges of the range of motion. This means that when you are worried, anxious, angry, or afraid, you stop breathing fully in and out. You decrease your range of breathing motion; you lock down. As your system gets less oxygen, you are less able to sustain a state of well-being on all levels. …

Andrew Solomon – Love, no matter what

In light of this week’s Supreme Court ruling striking down DOMA, this presentation by Andrew Solomon is much more relevant. Love is Love. He asks, What’s the line between unconditional love and unconditional acceptance? What do you think?

God has chosen us and never abandons us

The Mass First Reading for the day was from Genesis 13: 2, 5-18 (NIV):

2 Abram was very rich in livestock, silver and gold.

5 Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too.

6 The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions to be able to live together.

7 Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and those of Lot. (The Canaanites and Perizzites were living in the country at the time.)

8 Accordingly Abram said to Lot, ‘We do not want discord between us or between my herdsmen and yours, for we are kinsmen.

9 Is not the whole land open before you? Go in the opposite direction to me: if you take the left, I shall go right; if you take the right, I shall go left.’

10 Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere — this was before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of Yahweh or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar.

11 So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company:

12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the cities of the plain, pitching his tents on the outskirts of Sodom.

13 Now the people of Sodom were vicious and great sinners against Yahweh.

14 Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had parted company from him, ‘Look all round from where you are, to north and south, to east and west,

15 for all the land within sight I shall give to you and your descendants for ever.

16 I shall make your descendants like the dust on the ground; when people succeed in counting the specks of dust on the ground, then they will be able to count your descendants too!

17 On your feet! Travel the length and breadth of the country, for I mean to give it to you.’

18 So Abram moved his tent and went to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built an altar to Yahweh.
